چکیده

Escherichia Coli is the commonest cause of urinary tract infection (UTI) both in the community and hospital settings. Females experience recurrent UTI in the reproductive age group while men in the older age .Drug resistance among E.coli strains has now become a major concern as clinicians are left with very minimal therapeutic options. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:To isolate and identify the commonest pathogen causing UTI. To perform the anti-biotic susceptibility pattern of the isolated E.coli. To screen for Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase (ESBL) and Amp C Beta Lactamase enzyme production. MATERIALS AND METHODS:319 significant urine samples were collected from period of Jan.2011-Jan 2012, in the Department of Microbiology, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kancheepuram district Tamilnadu. The clinical samples were processed and identified as per standard microbiological techniques. Antimicrobial susceptibility was done using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method as per CLSI guidelines. ESBL and Amp C production were also identified. RESULTS:Out of 319 samples 200 (62.6%) were identified to be E.coli, the commonest cause of UTI. Females (74%) in the reproductive age group were more affected than males. There was an increase in UTI in male (39.5%) after the age of 45 years. Most of the E.coli strains to be found to be resistant to both Beta Lactam and Non Beta Lactam drugs. Out of 200 E.coli samples 84 (42%) were ESBL producers, 44(22%) were Amp C producers, 38(19%) were Amp C and ESBL co-producers. CONCLUSION:Multiple drug resistance among uropathogenic E.coli as left clinicians with very few therapeutic options. This study emphasizes on judicious use of antibiotics to prevent both Community and Hospital Acquired Infections.

Phenotypic Identification and Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern of AmpC beta-Lactamase Producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolated from Urinary Tract Infections from a Tertiary Care Hospital of Rawalpindi, Pakistan

Introduction: This study is aimed to compare phenotypic test methods and determine antibiotic susceptibility pattern of AmpC beta-lactamase producing uropathogenic Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in clinical isolates. Method: E. coli and K. pneumoniae were identified by standard microbiological procedures. Screening of AmpC beta-lactamase production was done by using cefoxitin disc (...

Prevalence of aac(3)-IIa, aph(3)-Ia and ant(2)- Ia Genes among Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli Isolates

Abstract Background and Objective: Escherichia coli, one of the most common causative agents of urinary tract infections (UTIs) acquired from community and hospital, has developed multiple resistances to various antibiotics such as aminoglycosides. The main resistance mechanism to aminoglycosides is inactivation of these drugs by a variety of acetyltransferase, nucleotidyltransferase, and phosp...

Study of class 1 integrons in multidrug-resistant uropathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from different hospitals in Karachi

Objective(s): Escherichia coli is the key pathogen in the family producing ESBL (extended spectrum β-lactamase) and associated with community-acquired infections. Therefore, this study was planned to determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of uropathogenic E. coli, prevalence of the ESBL gene group and class 1 integrons.Materials and Methods: Clinical isolates of uropathogenic E. coli w...

High frequency of mutations in gyrA gene associated with quinolones resistance in uropathogenic Escherichia coli isolates from the north of Iran

Objective(s): Regarding the global burden of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) infections, prevention and treatment of such infections play a significant role in healthcare management. The inordinate use of fluoroquinolones led to a worldwide spread of quinolone-resistant strains. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate mutations in codons 83 and 106 of gyrA gene in UPEC isolates in the ...

Molecular Characterization and Antimicrobial Resistance of Uropathogenic Escherichia coli

Background:Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are the most common infectious diseases in childhood. The Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains account for as much as 80% of UTIs. Objective:From a clinical perspective, it is important to know which virulence factors and antibiotic resistance properties are present in UPEC strains in pediatrics. Therefore, this study was carried out...
